After a week marked by horrific violence and continued threats to student safety on college campuses nationwide, the ĢƵ (ĢƵ) reaffirms that gun violence is a public health epidemic. As future physicians in training, we refuse to accept this current status quo and call for commonsense policy solutions guided by science and evidence.

On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley University. That same day, students were injured at a shooting which took place at Evergreen High School in Colorado. On September 11, 2025, at least six different HBCUs received anti-black, violent, and racist threats. All students deserve to learn free from threats of violence and fear.

This week is not an outlier. In 2025 alone, at least 100 incidents of gunfire on school grounds have been identified by Everytown for Gun Safety.1 Gun violence is the current leading cause of death for young people in the U.S.2 As future physicians, we strongly condemn this immoral and unjust state of affairs.

As escalating violence continues to endanger participation in civic life and the ability to safely receive an education, ĢƵ affirms the fundamental human right to live free from firearm violence. We urge comprehensive action to prevent firearm violence and protect the future of our democracy.

We understand the research: commonsense solutions to gun violence exist. Our Preambles, Purposes, and Principles clearly outline many of the federal- and state-level solutions that must be implemented by our policymakers in power, including:

  • Requiring universal background checks for all firearm transfers3
  • Enacting a ban on assault weapons (as defined by a one-feature test), which includes parts that may be readily assembled into an assault weapon and expressly prohibits the possession, sale, purchase, transfer, loan, transportation, distribution, importation, and manufacture of such weapons4
  • Subjecting the sale, transfer, and manufacture of both completed and unfinished frames and receivers to the same legislation that relates to fully assembled firearms5
  • Prohibiting the sale, transfer, manufacture, and possession of undetectable firearms by requiring that all operable firearms be detectable by standard screening systems5

International Impact of U.S. Gun Violence:

Gun violence is currently perceived by all parts of society, including large institutional health organizations and the media, as an epidemic that threatens the credence of the U.S. as a developed nation with a safe and healthy society. Some travelers from outside of the U.S. actively avoid visiting this country out of concern of going to a place where gun violence appears to be comparatively out of control. The societal ramifications of gun violence in the U.S. constitute an increasingly dire threat to the country’s international reputation, public health leadership, and educational competitiveness. ĢƵ has a duty to stand and speak up for a clear, evidence-based, and international-minded agenda in support of these issues.

  • The U.S., historically a leader in public health innovations, faces criticism for failing to address gun violence as a preventable public health crisis. This diminishes the country’s moral authority in global health forums.
  • U.S. universities are traditionally destinations for international students and scholars, but persistent gun violence on and around campuses threatens their ability to provide a safe academic environment for their current and prospective students, their subsequent ability to recruit new students, and global educational stature.
  • Restrictions on gun violence research such as the Dickey Amendment have made the U.S. unique among high-income countries for its lack of robust gun injury data and prevention science, drawing negative attention from societies that prioritize their focus to research and address these issues appropriately.

Actions We Can Take Now:

In response, ĢƵ continues to take the lead in helping future physicians gain the tool to address firearm violence. In 2022, ĢƵ’s Medical Students for Gun Safety (MSGS) Campaign launched a national Firearm Violence Prevention Curriculum Guide, “Integrating Firearm Safety into Medical School Curricula”.6 This guide was created by members of our MSGS Steering Committee and is designed to provide a comprehensive resource and roadmap for firearm violence prevention in medical education, empowering medical students and faculty to be advocates and clinicians.

Future physicians must be part of the solution, now more than ever. Please fill out to stay connected with us as we continue to advocate for gun violence prevention. We call on our members to join us, as we lift our collective voice in demanding change.

Winning venture offers a bold AI-powered solution to the administrative overload plaguing healthcare systems

Crystal City, VA – In a high-energy finale to the 2025 ĢƵ National Convention, the ĢƵ launched a new tradition: the first-ever ĢƵ Innovation Fest, a national pitch competition spotlighting medical students leading transformational change in healthcare. From a powerful lineup of student-led ventures tackling urgent problems—health literacy, diagnostic access, research equity, and more—Eden, a smart automation platform founded by Naomi Rajput, a pre-medical student at Northeastern University, was named the inaugural winner.

Eden streamlines the healthcare system’s most burdensome back-office workflows—automating scheduling, insurance verification, billing, and medical record management. The platform has already demonstrated a 50% reduction in call volume and a fivefold gain in check-in efficiency. With integration across more than 1,000 insurers, Eden aims to reduce clinician burnout, improve patient experience, and restore time for what matters most: care.

“I built Eden because I saw firsthand how administrative chaos erodes both care quality and clinician wellbeing,” said Naomi Rajput, founder of Eden. “We’re proving that technology—when designed thoughtfully—can restore the human side of healthcare. Winning this competition gives us more than recognition; it gives us momentum to keep building.”

“People are multifaceted – so are physicians and entrepreneurship flows as easily from us as learning the Krebs cycle.”

What the Next Generation of Physicians Is Solving: Themes from Innovation Fest 2025

The revealed clear patterns in what future doctors are building—and what they’re determined to fix. Five major themes emerged:

Breaking Barriers to Access

  • decodehealth (Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine): A multilingual AI chatbot and medical library supporting chronic illness management in underserved populations.
  • TurmerikAI Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania): An AI-based tool to expand equity in clinical trial recruitment and participation.

Rebuilding Administrative Infrastructure

  • Eden (Northeastern) – Winner: Automates key operational workflows across health systems, cutting friction, errors, and staff fatigue.

Advancing Equitable Diagnostics

  • Wireless ECG pad (Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine): A wire-free, AI-powered ECG that improves cardiac care in low-resource environments.
  • EzMTX Assay (University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson): A portable diagnostic supporting safe delivery of high-dose methotrexate in pediatric oncology, especially where labs are limited.

Confronting Cognitive Health Gaps

  • Mobile Memory (Yale School of Medicine): An AI/ML screening tool for Alzheimer’s detection using natural language processing in a 30-second interaction.

Humanizing Technology

Across all ventures, students embedded equity, empathy, and usability into their designs—meeting patients where they are, across languages, abilities, and life stages.

“For 75 years, ĢƵ has been a force for health equity, universal care, and bold reform,” said Jennifer Salehi, Executive Director of ĢƵ. “With Innovation Fest, we’re expanding that legacy—making space for invention as well as advocacy. Today’s medical students are designing the future of healthcare. It’s our job to support and amplify their ideas, especially those that harness digital tools to dismantle structural barriers to care.”

The ĢƵ (ĢƵ) announced today that Jennifer Salehi will serve as interim Executive Director beginning January 1, 2025. The transition follows the announcement that Chief Executive Officer Jamie Thayer Scates will step down at the end of the year.

With 22 years of experience at ĢƵ concentrated in membership services and operations, Jennifer is uniquely suited as a steward of the oldest and largest independent association of future physicians in the United States. Having been central to the fulfillment of many of ĢƵ’s initiatives, Jennifer is also well-suited to oversee seamlessly the upcoming Future Physicians for Change conference in April. Her vision for the organization centers its members’ needs, reconnecting with alumni, continuing to grow ĢƵ’s Institutional Partnership program, and streamlining collaboration with national and chapter-level leaders.

Jennifer will also focus on working with the ĢƵ Foundation’s board of directors, which had been rejuvenated by Jamie Thayer Scates as she led a fundraising effort that secured over $3.5 million in funding toward ĢƵ priorities. The funds raised brought about ĢƵ’s Reproductive Health Project and allowed for fellowships supporting projects around medical student well-being, health equity, and conflict of interest.

Beyond these, Jamie leaves a legacy of evolution and progress at ĢƵ, having guided the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic, established ĢƵ’s successful Institutional Partnership program, and strengthened relationships with ĢƵ’s member benefit partners. Through Jamie’s vision, ĢƵ adapted its signature annual convention by collaborating with other progressive student organizations after being one of the first medical organizations to create virtual spaces for members and allies during the height of the pandemic. But most of all, Jamie exuded an unflagging belief in the organization’s potential to change healthcare and medical education for the better, inspiring staff, national leaders, and alumni. This belief ushered the organization into its 75th year.

What’s Next Is What We Make It

ĢƵ National President’s Statement on 2024 Election

Hi future doctor, Annelise here.

I’m writing to you and honestly, I’m not quite sure how to articulate all of my emotions as we face an upcoming four years of uncertainty. When it comes to leadership, especially student-led organizational leadership, we often grapple with how to lead when you’re not quite sure what’s next. For our national leaders, our chapter leaders, and all of us as future and current physicians, the question is now— what’s next? Regardless of how you voted during this election, there are still pressing concerns that we, as the future of healthcare, need to reckon with: affordability+accessibility of healthcare, climate sustainability, mental health, gun violence, abortion rights and women’s health… the list goes on.

Over the next four years, in a major way, we will inherit the healthcare system that is forged and changed by this election. All of you are going through your training, me included, and developing into the kind of physician you will become and the leader you will be in your community. Over the next four years you will, quite literally, learn how to stand between life and death not only in the hospital room, but also beyond it. You will take an oath, whether to serve as a student doctor or as a fully-fledged physician, and be charged with doing no harm regardless of your political or personal beliefs. You will be scrutinized, tokenized, and some of you will choose to risk your livelihoods and licenses because of your beliefs and commitment to this profession. To become a physician in this day and age takes a tremendous amount of courage, patience, and grit. It also takes a tremendous amount of privilege and opportunity that we, as future physicians, can use to continue to fight for our patients and our profession. Regardless of who is in the White House, our fight happens day in and day out, patient by patient, family by family. If you’re anything like me, that’s exactly why you chose to dedicate your life to this work.

Medicine is not sexy, it is not easy, but oh is it worth it. We bring a lens to the medical profession that our predecessors cannot possibly fathom. So, it is up to us to use our voices to help them, our patients, and our communities understand the dangers we see coming. We have faced crises like this before; standing up for our values unapologetically is something that we at ĢƵ know a thing or two about. ĢƵ was forged in the fire of the VietNam War alongside the vision for and the values found within the .

Today, I hope you’re taking the time to process and be with yourself and your loved ones. I wish I had the answers as to what’s next, but I can promise you that ĢƵ is, and will continue to be, the place you can come home to find your people and your voice. It’s been 75 years of us standing up for each other and our patients, and we’re not about to stop now.

To those of us who are scared, angry, outraged, saddened, exhausted—we see you, I see you, and we’re here with you. We have put together a whole host of resources to help you navigate through this time (see below) and we are working on ways we can share and be in community together— stay tuned. Know you are not alone! We will regroup and find the strength to carry on towards our founding vision of a high-quality, affordable, and sustainable health care system that puts people (patients and providers) ahead of profits and ensures all have access to the care they need — regardless of how much they earn, who they work for, or what state they live in.

In response to recent feedback regarding shifts in ĢƵ’s CBIA (Constitution, Bylaws and Internal Affairs)

As the current Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of the ĢƵ, we stand united in our commitment to uphold the integrity and broad scope of ĢƵ’s mission. Our organization has always been more than just a single-issue entity; we are a dynamic, multi-issue organization dedicated to addressing a wide array of crucial healthcare challenges.

ĢƵ is, and always has been, a student-led organization. This means that the direction we take each year is directly influenced by the voices of our current student members. They are not only future healthcare professionals but also current leaders who identify and prioritize the areas where ĢƵ can make the most significant impact. Whether it’s advocating for reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, striving for greater diversity among practicing physicians, or enhancing healthcare access in rural areas—our mission covers the vast landscape of healthcare needs.

We appreciate the passion of our alumni, who continue to use their voices to advocate for what they believe in. This is exactly what ĢƵ aims to teach future physicians: the power and responsibility of advocacy.

We recognize the concerns raised about ĢƵ’s recent decision to expand potential funding options, and to consider conditional funding from pharmaceutical companies. We want to reassure you that this decision was made with rigorous debate and thoughtful consideration of how best to support our mission while maintaining our values. We recognize the continued concern for potential undue influence of industry funding on medical education and the treatment of patients and as such, are still committed to our PharmFree work. Additionally, we took explicit care to include in the decision that any future funds accepted would be designated strictly for initiatives that align with our core goals, and come with stringent safeguards to prevent any influence over our content or advocacy. This commitment to our values is non-negotiable.

We remain, as ever, committed to ensuring that all our operations, including our use of funds, adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct and independence. We believe in the power of open dialogue and are always here to address any concerns from our community. In fact, we welcome and encourage ongoing conversations about ĢƵ’s policies and practices.

As we move forward, we remain unapologetically ĢƵ, dedicated to our mission of improving healthcare for all, driven by the innovative and compassionate spirit of our student leaders. We invite you to join us in these endeavors, whether by engaging in discussions, participating in ĢƵ programs, or contributing to our mission in other ways.

Together, we can continue to achieve great things for the future of healthcare.

Every year, ĢƵ organizes its House of Delegates (HOD) meeting, a pivotal event where members actively shape the direction of the organization. Serving as ĢƵ’s official policy-making body, the HOD brings together representatives from our chapters to vote on policies and elect national officers. It’s an inclusive forum where every ĢƵ member has a voice, allowing us to collectively decide on key issues that impact our organization’s trajectory.

ĢƵ’s mission is to educate and empower diverse future physicians to become unapologetic advocates for equitable healthcare and foster generations of culturally respectful leaders. Our vision is ambitious yet hopeful – we envision a world where healthcare is accessible, medicine is affordable, and systems support the diversity we see around us.

At ĢƵ, we deeply care about maintaining and striving for upholding these values. Our Preamble, Purposes, and Principles (PPP) embody these values, while our Constitution, Bylaws, and Internal Affairs (CBIA) dictate how we govern and manage our organization to uphold our mission and vision.

This year, the discussions held during the Annual HOD Meeting and our Board of Trustees(BOT) meeting were particularly impactful. We deliberated on a wide range of topics, including proposed changes to ĢƵ’s membership types, the restructuring of the Action Committees, the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, human rights issues, and our relationship with industry. Our unwavering commitment to equity in health care has never been more vital, guiding us to navigate the complexities of our mission with integrity and pragmatism. In response to the evolving challenges, we have thoughtfully decided to accept funding from commercial actors within the health care sector, strictly aimed at enhancing our operational capacities. This strategic decision, motivated by the urgent need to broaden our reach and capabilities, is carefully considered to ensure it does not undermine our mission, vision, goals, or the integrity of our work. Through strategic partnerships with commercial entities, we seek to harness additional resources, expertise, and networks to substantially amplify our impact, ensuring these collaborations align with our core values and objectives and contribute meaningfully to our vision for health care equity.

We recognize the potential complexities and concerns this decision may generate and wish to assure our community of our deep commitment to transparency, accountability, and our mission. Our resolve to drive meaningful, positive change is stronger than ever, and we remain devoted to engaging in open dialogue, listening attentively, and transparently sharing our strategies and decisions. Together, with our partners, supporters, and the communities we serve, we are committed to forging a future where health care equity is achieved for everyone. Through collective effort, mutual understanding, and shared ambition, we will confront these challenges and realize the profound change we strive for.

As we move forward, ĢƵ remains dedicated to fostering a community of future physicians who are not only clinically proficient but also compassionate advocates for change. Some of ĢƵ’s impactful initiatives this fiscal year include:

  1. ĢƵ Digital Rural Health Corps Initiative: Addressing rural healthcare disparities through Telehealth and digital resources, enhancing digital literacy in targeted counties.

I am thrilled to share the profound experience I had as the honored . Congressman Scott’s invitation speaks volumes about the vital commitment all legislators should uphold: amplifying the voices of healthcare providers, especially amid challenging times where reproductive rights and freedom face threats, ensuring policymaking aligns with evidence-based, patient-centered care principles.

Attending the State of the Union address was an extraordinary experience, filled with inspiration and hope. Being on Capitol Hill among Congresspeople, esteemed guests, and fellow advocates, including abortion rights advocates like Dr. Caitlin Bernard, Dr. Damla Karsan, representatives from Planned Parenthood, and many others, was incredibly empowering. Engaging with leaders such as Whip Katherine Clark and the Pro-Choice Caucus allowed for profound discussions on why abortion access is essential healthcare and why it must be protected. Witnessing the collective dedication to fighting for reproductive rights and abortion access filled my cup of hope and reinforced my resolve to continue advocating for comprehensive reproductive healthcare.

During this significant event, I had the privilege of meeting with Secretary Becerra, we engaged in a thoughtful discussion on the underlying reasons why many aspiring physicians are hesitant to pursue practice in states burdened by abortion restrictions. We explored how these limitations not only discourage healthcare professionals but also perpetuate healthcare disparities, exacerbating the challenges faced by underserved communities.

As a future obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN) and abortion care provider, I am committed to ensuring access to comprehensive reproductive care for all individuals. It is why I have made the conscious decision to apply only to residency programs in states without stringent abortion restrictions. These states provide the environment necessary for me to receive the training I need to provide all aspects of comprehensive reproductive care without fear of legal repercussions and without fear of harming my patients.

Sitting in the gallery, listening to President Biden’s address, I was reminded of the myriad challenges our nation faces, from education to reproductive freedom to global humanitarian crises. As the next generation of physicians, I am proud to stand with the ĢƵ in advocating for quality, affordable healthcare for all. Access to comprehensive health services, including reproductive healthcare and safe, voluntary abortions, must be recognized as fundamental human rights.

My in Ms. Magazine, which caught Congressman Scott’s attention, underscores the power of student activism in driving meaningful change. Through strategic collaborations with organizations like the Hub Project’s Free and Just Campaign, ĢƵ empowers students to advocate for healthcare policies that positively impact our future patients and communities.

At ĢƵ, every student has a seat at the table, an opportunity to engage directly with policymakers, and a platform to make their voices heard. By speaking up and taking action, we can shape the future of healthcare and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all.
